Item #1021
Cornelius "Griffin and Serpent" Four Arm Gas Chandelier $9000.00 Here we have this great brass four arm gas chandelier that is attributed to Cornelius & Sons out of Philadelphia. It dates from the mid to late 1800s and is in excellent condition. It has recently been polished and converted to electricity. The detail and styling throughout is second to none....each arm is in the form of a Griffin and Serpent. The main body is adorned with highly detailed decorations which include scrolling leafy foliage and fine chain that runs down to each arm. The four period frosted glass shades have a very nice geometric pattern cut into them which is sort of Aztec in style. Each shade measures about 7" tall and about 6" in diameter with 2 5/8" fitter rims. All the shades are in excellent condition with the exception of a few fitter rim chips which are not noticeable when attached to the fixture and are being mentioned for accuracy. The fine chain that drapes down from the center shaft is not original but compliments the fixture nicely....this would have had some very fancy cast brass chain in this area at one time. Unfortunately at the time this fixture was found the original chain was missing. The ceiling cap that was found with this fixture may or may not be original.....we think the original ceiling cap would have probably been more decorative, keeping with the ornate design of the chandelier. Despite these minor short comings this fixture is a real find and looks spectacular....especially when lit. It has a total drop of 35" and an overall diameter of 25". This is another great example of early American decorative art history that we are proud to be offering. Early American lighting of this quality and caliber is becoming very scarce.
